Laser Skin Resurfacing

Commonly referred to a laser peel, laser skin resurfacing removes the outer, damaged layer of skin to reveal a smoother, younger appearance.  A laser is used to send short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at the outer layer of skin.  These pulsating beams effectively remove the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and heat the layers beneath (dermis) stimulating collagen growth.  As the treated area heals, the new skin that forms is smoother and firmer.  Dr. Swail’s laser resurfacing procedure can improve:

  • Fine lines or wrinkles
  • Small scars from acne or chickenpox
  • Non-responsive skin caused by a previous facelift procedure
  • Aged or sun-damaged skin
  • Liver spots
  • Improve skin tone and complexion
  • Warts
  • Birthmarks
  • Enlarged oil glands of the nose

Laser Resurfacing Procedure

In most cases, laser resurfacing will begin with skin treatments 6 weeks before the actual procedure to prepare the skin.  Skin treatments are fully customized to the individual needs of the patient to minimize complications and to obtain optimum results.  Prior to the procedure, numbing agents will also be used to minimize discomfort during the procedure.  In some cases, patients may also be given sedatives to maximize patient comfort.  Laser skin resurfacing typically takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the amount of correction needed.  Dr. Swail uses CO2 laser resurfacing to vaporize the surface skin and reveal the undamaged layer beneath.

Laser Resurfacing Results

There can be some discomfort following a laser skin resurfacing as the surface of the face heals.  It is recommended that patients keep their head elevated and use ice to minimize swelling and discomfort following the procedure.  Full recovery typically takes 1-2 weeks depending on the size and condition of the area treated.  Once the surface of the face has healed, light and oil-free make-up can be used to disguise any temporary redness.  Dr. Swail will recommend sunscreens and moisturizers to help treat the affected area following the procedure.  Once healed, the new layer of skin will be fuller and appear more youthful.

Dr. Swail meets with each patient personally to discuss their desired outcomes and expectations prior to each procedure.  This allows Dr. Swail to design a customized procedure to achieve great long-lasting results, following a laser skin resurfacing procedure.
