Also known as suction assisted lipectomy, liposuction is a very popular and effective procedure designed to remove excess fat deposits that have not responded to exercise or diet. It is not designed to replace diet or exercise and is often more effective for patients who are not significantly overweight.
Through multiple small incisions, a narrow and hollow tube (cannula) is used to dislodge and removed stubborn excess fat deposits form the affected areas. By carefully moving the cannula in a fluid back and forth motion, excess fat deposits can be successfully removed, and the area can be contoured to the patient’s desired results. Liposuction results are generally permanent, but fat deposits can return in cases where excessive weight gain occurs.
Due to pregnancy, significant weight loss, aging, sun damage, or heredity, skin can lose elasticity and become loose and dimpled. A body lift is designed to rejuvenate the skin on the torso and upper legs to deliver a firm and contoured appearance. A firm and contoured appearance is widely seen as a sign of physical fitness and health. Where skin has lost elasticity, traditional exercise and diet may have no effect on the appearance of loose or sagging skin. It is in these cases where a body lift can restore skin elasticity and deliver a smooth and contoured body appearance.
A body lift works by removing excess skin, fat and tissue from the affected areas and by tightening underlying tissue. Depending on the amount of correction necessary, the size, length and location of the incision will vary. A body lift can correct loose or sagging skin and has also been known to minimize cellulite in the affected areas. Dr. Swail may also recommend combining a body lift with additional procedures like a breast lift or liposuction to maintain body proportion.
Also known as a tummy tuck, Abdominoplasty is designed to correct loose or sagging skin of the abdomen. Due to pregnancy, weight fluctuation, age, or heredity, skin can lose elasticity and become loose. The best candidates have pockets of fat or loose skin that has not responded well to diet and exercise. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat deposits and also tightens underlying muscles in the abdomen to ensure long-lasting results. By removing the excess skin, the overall skin elasticity can be restored to a more natural state and the loose look and feel to the abdomen can be corrected. The result is a firm and smooth contour to the abdomen. Abdominoplasty will likely leave a permanent scar stretching between the hips, although it should be low enough for a bikini to conceal it.
After substantial weight loss, weight gain or simply from the effects of aging, skin on the upper arms can become inelastic, loose and flabby. An arm lift (Brachioplasty) reduces the excess skin and fat from the upper arm, and reshapes the arm to produce a new smooth and firm arm contour.
If there is a considerable amount of fat present, Dr. Swail may also recommend partnering an arm lift with liposuction to remove this excess fat and contour the shape of the arm. An arm lift will provide a more toned and proportionate appearance to the arms and restore the skin’s natural elasticity.
Inelastic skin can form on the thigh due to extreme weight loss attributed to diet, exercise or bariatric surgery. A thigh lift is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper legs to improve the overall contour and restore natural skin elasticity. This procedure is often combined with breast lifts, facelifts and arm lifts to retain an attractive body proportion.
The smoother and tighter contour that results from a thigh lift is almost immediately visible following a thigh lift procedure. Once swelling and bruising subside, the results will improve and the dramatically improved skin quality will be more apparent in both touch and feel.
