There are 43 muscles responsible for helping us smile, squint, and frown, and over time, these muscle contractions lend themselves to fine lines, wrinkles, and other imperfections that we associate with age. If you have been searching for a non-surgical cosmetic procedure to help rejuvenate your appearance, then Boulder Valley Plastic Surgery would love to speak with you. Eight Frequently Asked Questions About Botox

What Is Botox?

Botox is a drug that is derived from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. Although this might sound off-putting, the cosmetic application of the drug includes only trace amounts of a highly purified protein from this bacteria. Medically, the drug is used to treat various muscular conditions. Cosmetically, it is an injectable, non-surgical procedure that can help minimize wrinkles and restore self-confidence.

What Conditions Can Be Treated?

Botox works by temporarily weakening facial muscles, and therefore, can be used in a wide variety of applications. Some of the most common applications are designed to:

  • Reduce the appearance of forehead lines
  • Minimize frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Reduce smile lines around the eyes, also known as “crow’s feet”
  • Minimize fine lines on the lower eyelid
    And more

Is Botox Safe?

The cosmetic formulation of Botox has been tested extensively. When Botox treatments are properly administered by a certified Botox provider, patients should have every confidence that the drug is safe and effective for cosmetic enhancements.

Do Botox Treatments Hurt?

Your treatment will begin with the application of a numbing agent to maximize your comfort. As areas of your face are being numbed, you may feel a slight pinch or prick at the time of the anesthetic injection.

Are There Any Side Effects?

As with any cosmetic or non-cosmetic procedure, there is a risk of side effects. Dr. Swail will review these with you in detail to provide full disclosure about possible side effect to ensure your understanding. Side effects vary, but they may include: eyelid drooping, pain and/or swelling at the injection site, vision problems, neck pain, headaches, and allergic reactions.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

The cost of Botox treatments through Boulder Valley Plastic Surgery depends on the type of procedure and number of injections you receive. During your consultation, Dr. Swall will review your desired outcome and current condition to devise a treatment plan that will work best for you. Once this is determined, we will be in a better position to estimate the cost of your treatment.

What Is The Treatment and Recovery Time?

Botox treatments have been coined “the lunchtime procedure” because they only take about 10 minutes to administer and there is minimal downtime involved. After your procedure, you will be free to go about your day as usual. Patients usually achieve noticeable results within 24 to 48 hours after their procedure. If necessary, you will be provided with appropriate after-care instructions before leaving our facility.

How Long Does A Botox Treatment Last?

Because each patient’s muscle structure and response to treatment is different, there is no exact period of time the treatment will last. However, most patients enjoy the benefits of their Botox treatment for three to four months before the Botox begins to wear off. As the results diminish, your muscles will slowly regain strength, causing fine lines and wrinkles to return in time.
