Breast augmentation has quickly become one of the most popular and most requested procedures in plastic surgery. Breast augmentation uses breast implants to achieve fuller breasts or to restore volume to breasts that may have lost volume due to substantial weight loss or pregnancy.
As the popularity of breast augmentation has grown, more procedure options have become available for patients to give each woman a personalized augmentation for optimal results. If you are considering breast surgery, Dr. Swail will meet with you for a full examination and consultation. In the consultation, he will review the multiple incision location options, different types of implants, and different placement locations. This consultation will help determine which options best meet the needs of each individual patient and deliver desired results.
A woman’s breast can change over time, and it is natural for breasts to lose their youthful shape and firmness. As a woman ages, the skin supporting the breast can lose its elasticity due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss/gain, aging, gravity, or even heredity. This can cause the breasts to rest lower on the chest. A breast lift is designed to correct this by removing excess skin from the breast and by tightening the surrounding tissue. A breast lift is designed to lift the breasts to a more youthful and firm position on the chest.
In cases where patients are unhappy with the overall volume, Dr. Swail may recommend partnering a breast lift with breast augmentation or breast reduction to allow for the best results. Keep in mind, a breast lift does not affect the overall volume of the breast.
Large breasts can lead to a number of physical and emotional problems. Along with self-image issues, women with large breasts can suffer from neck and back pain that limits their ability to lead active lifestyles. Breast reduction can alleviate emotional distress and physical discomfort by removing excess fat and tissue from the breast which may be causing undue harm.
The main disadvantage of a breast reduction is that, in order to decrease the overall volume of the breast and reshape the breast, it is necessary to remove excess skin, which leads to scarring. The typical scar pattern is often referred to as an “anchor scar” because it goes around the nipple, vertically down the underside of the breast, and continues transversely along the fold under the breast. In cases where less correction is necessary, Dr. Swail may be able to use a short scar technique to minimize visible scarring. Regardless of the scarring that results from this procedure, the satisfaction is very high due to the difference it can have on physical and emotional distress.
Breast explant surgery is the procedure used to remove breast implants from the chest. Women choose breast explant surgery for many reasons, including implant complications, health concerns, lifestyle changes, or simply a desire to return to a more natural look and feel.
During breast explant surgery, the implants are carefully removed and the surrounding breast tissue is evaluated. Depending on the patient’s goals and the condition of the breast tissue, additional procedures such as capsulectomy (removal of the scar capsule around the implant) or a breast lift may be recommended to restore a natural breast shape.

Gynecomastia is a common condition seen in nearly 50 percent of all men at some point in their life. While most cases resolve themselves over time, gynecomastia can cause enlarged male breasts that can be embarrassing for men. The condition is generally attributed to hormonal imbalances and can be amplified by obesity. Enlarged male breasts can also be caused by certain medications and the use of anabolic steroids. In cases where the condition persists into adulthood, gynecomastia surgery is available to correct enlarged male breasts, restoring a flat and masculine appearance to the chest.
Dr. Swail performs gynecomastia surgery through direct excision as well as liposuction. Surgical scars are generally minimal, and satisfaction with this procedure is high. In some cases where male breast enlargement is more severe, it may be necessary to remove skin, which will cause more significant scarring.

Dr. Jeffrey Swail is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the Colorado Medical Society, and the Boulder County Medical Society.
Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, he earned his medical degree in 1989 and completed surgical training at Queen’s University and Dalhousie University.
For more than a decade, Dr. Swail has volunteered his skills on surgical mission trips, providing cleft lip and palate care to children in the Philippines through Mending Faces, where he serves as Chair of Surgical Services. He received the organization’s Humanitarian Award in 2007.
