Many men take great pride in their physique, especially their chest and upper body. When a male has excessive tissue in one or both of his breasts, he could be suffering from a medical condition called gynecomastia. This may cause him to feel embarrassed in social and romantic situations, and he may suffer from impaired self-confidence. Boulder Valley Plastic Surgery is here to help individuals who are ready to experience the benefits of gynecomastia surgery. If you would like more information about the procedure, schedule a consultation with Dr. Swail today. In the meantime, continue reading to learn more about this condition.

Gynecomastia FAQs

What Are the Causes?

Quite often, it is a hormonal imbalance that leads to one or both of a man’s breasts to become enlarged or overdeveloped. However, other factors such as obesity, heredity, and thyroid disease can also play a role. Studies have also concluded that use of anabolic steroids, street drugs, and alcohol can also cause breast tissue abnormalities in men.

How Is Gynecomastia Diagnosed?

Proper diagnosis of this condition requires a physician’s exam. Your doctor will likely perform blood tests and a mammogram initially. If these medical tests do not yield sufficient results, then you may be referred for a computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, or your doctor may want to do a biopsy of your breast tissue.

What Are the Treatment Options?

In some instances, there are certain supplements and medications that can help reduce the enlarged breast tissue. While some of these non-surgical methods can be effective, not all of them will produce the permanent results that gynecomastia surgery can. This procedure is often called a “male breast reduction,” and it typically includes some combination of surgical excision and liposuction to permanently reduce the volume of tissue. If you are a healthy, non-smoking male and your breast development has stabilized, you may be a candidate for this surgery.

What Are the Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery?

The primary benefit of a gynecomastia surgical procedure is, of course, the reduction of the amount of excess tissue on the patient’s chest. In addition to this benefit, there are several supplementary benefits to this surgical procedure, including:

  • Enhanced confidence and self-esteem
  • Improved posture
  • More masculine chest contours
  • Enhanced comfort with physical activity

Because every case of gynecomastia is different, no two patients will have the same considerations when it comes to treating this condition. During your initial consultation with Dr. Swail, he will review your individual case to determine if surgical correction is the best course of action for you. If he feels that it is, then he will determine the best surgical approach for your unique needs.
